What to Include in a Wedding Program (With a Simple Template)

A wedding program tells guests what is about to happen and who is part of it. At minimum it needs your names, the date and place, the order of the ceremony and your wedding party. Anything beyond that is optional, and shorter programs are often read more closely.

What to include in a wedding program

1. The heading

Start with your names, the wedding date, and the venue and city. Many couples add a short line such as “The wedding of” above their names.

2. The order of service

List each part of the ceremony in order. It helps guests know when to stand, when to listen and how long is left.

3. The wedding party

Name your officiant, parents, wedding attendants, readers and musicians. Guests like knowing who everyone is, and it is a nice way to thank the people who helped.

4. Readings and music

List the title and author of any reading, and the names of the songs if they matter to you.

5. A thank-you note

Finish with a line or two for your guests and families. It is the most personal part of the program, and it does not need to be long.

6. What happens next

Tell guests where to go after the ceremony, such as “Join us for cocktails on the terrace.”

  • Registry details
  • Long personal stories
  • Instructions already given on a sign, such as an unplugged ceremony notice

Are wedding programs necessary?

No. A short ceremony with a small group can go without them. They are most useful for longer ceremonies, religious or cultural traditions that some guests may not know, and weddings with a large party to introduce.

How many should you print?

Plan on about one program for every two guests, since couples usually share, then add a few extra for keepsakes and family. If you would rather every guest had one, simply print one each.

Choosing a format

A tall, narrow card of 4.25 × 11 inches is a popular choice. It is easy to hold, fits a full order of service and can double as a fan at an outdoor wedding if printed on a sturdy paper.
